CityReporter Supported Devices

The CityReporter mobile app runs well on either Android or Apple devices. If you’re looking to purchase new smartphones or tablets to use with CityReporter, first check with your IT department to find out if they prefer Android or Apple products. They may have a preference so it’s easier for them to provide support.

When it comes to Android devices, it’s important to choose a good brand because there is a lot of variety in the hardware quality. The lower-end brands have slower processors, less RAM, poor Wi-Fi connectivity, and lower resolution cameras. We recommend Samsung tablets, which we have found to be high quality and reliable.

Apple devices have more consistent quality since they’re from a single manufacturer, but also have a higher price point. If you want true GPS capability on an iPad, you would need to get an iPad with data, even if you won’t be using a data plan, as the Wi-Fi only model only approximates your location.

Minimum requirements:

  • Quad core 1.6 GHz processor or better
  • 2 GB RAM or higher
  • 8 GB storage or higher
  • Android OS v7.1 and above
  • Apple iOS v13.0 and above

Although our app will run on the minimum OS versions above, a newer model tablet with the latest OS will stay compatible with CityReporter longer. Android and Apple force us to drop support for older OS versions on a regular basis, and the OS on older devices can’t always be upgraded.

Some other considerations when deciding on a device:

  • What screen size is comfortable for viewing, typing, and carrying around? Some of our users prefer a smaller tablet that fits in a jacket pocket for when they need both hands free.
  • Do you require a camera with a flash? Sometimes you may need to take pictures in a dark area, but most tablets and iPads don’t come with a camera flash. For that reason, many of our users also install CityReporter on their phones.
  • Do you need cellular capability for connecting in the field? Most CityReporter functions are available without an internet connection, so a Wi-Fi only device may be sufficient.
  • Do you need satellite GPS capability? Some models don’t include true GPS and are less accurate at determining your location.
